Visiting Doolin Cave means traveling 70 feet (20 meters) below ground. Because of the natural terrain, access is strictly limited to visitors who can safely navigate steep stairs. Here is exactly what to expect physically when taking the tour.

Is Doolin Cave wheelchair accessible?

No, the underground cave is not wheelchair accessible.

The main chamber is located 70 feet below the surface. The only way in and out is via a steep shaft with stairs. Wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and strollers cannot enter the cave system. Above ground, the visitor centre and Doolin Cave Cafe are accessible.

How many stairs are in Doolin Cave?

Visitors must navigate exactly 125 steps in each direction.

You will walk down 125 steps to reach the main cavern. At the end of the 50-minute guided tour, you must climb those same 125 steps to exit. There is no elevator. The staircase includes a landing every ten steps so you can catch your breath.

What are the fitness requirements for the tour?

You need a moderate level of basic fitness to complete the stair climb.

The tour is explicitly unsuitable for individuals with poor cardiovascular health. If you have severe mobility issues or spinal injuries, you cannot join the underground tour. You must also wear a hard hat and navigate low cave ceilings.

Can young children manage the cave stairs?

The tour is not recommended for children under 4 years of age.

Strollers are not allowed underground. Small children may struggle with the 125 steps and the dark environment.

What can I do if I cannot enter the cave?

You can explore the visitor centre, cafe, and the Eco-Trail.

The 1km Farmland Eco-Trail is a gentle, looped chip-stone pathway on the surface. It showcases local woodland plants and rare animal breeds. You can also visit the pottery shop, which sells crafts made from glacial cave clay.

What footwear is required for the stairs?

You must wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip.

Open-toed footwear is strictly prohibited. The cave terrain is wet and uneven in places. Proper walking boots or flat shoes will help you navigate the 125 steps safely.
